Child and Adolescent Counselling

Childhood and adolescence are periods of tremendous growth, discovery, and change. Yet they can also be times of confusion, emotional turmoil, and difficulty. Children and teenagers face a unique set of pressures — academic expectations, social dynamics, family changes, identity exploration, and the challenges of navigating an increasingly complex world. When these challenges become overwhelming, professional support can make a profound difference. At Niramaya Family and Child Counselling Centre, our Child and Adolescent Counselling services are designed to provide young people with a safe, understanding, and supportive space to express themselves, work through their difficulties, and build the emotional skills they need to thrive.

Children and adolescents often experience emotional and behavioral difficulties differently than adults. They may not have the vocabulary or self-awareness to articulate what they are feeling, and their distress often shows up through changes in behavior — withdrawal from family and friends, declining academic performance, irritability or anger, changes in sleep or appetite, physical complaints like headaches or stomachaches, or increased clinginess and anxiety about separation. These signs are not simply phases to be waited out; they are signals that a young person is struggling and needs support.

Our approach to Child and Adolescent Counselling is developmentally appropriate, meaning we tailor our methods to match the age, maturity level, and individual needs of each young client. For younger children, we use play therapy techniques that allow them to express their feelings, process their experiences, and work through challenges through the natural language of play. Through drawing, storytelling, sandplay, and creative activities, children can communicate what they may not yet have the words to say. For adolescents, we engage in conversation-based therapy that respects their growing autonomy while providing a non-judgmental space to explore their thoughts, feelings, and identity. We meet teenagers where they are, building trust through genuine respect and understanding rather than authority.

The range of concerns we address through our Child and Adolescent Counselling services is extensive. Common issues include anxiety and excessive worry, including school anxiety, social anxiety, and separation anxiety; depression, low mood, and withdrawal from activities and relationships; behavioral challenges such as aggression, defiance, or acting out at home or school; difficulty managing anger or overwhelming emotions; academic stress and pressure to perform; social difficulties including bullying, peer conflict, or trouble making friends; adjustment to major life changes such as parental separation or divorce, relocation, the loss of a loved one, or the arrival of a new sibling; low self-esteem and negative self-image; grief and loss; and neurodivergent experiences including ADHD, autism spectrum traits, or learning differences that affect emotional well-being and daily functioning.

We recognize that a child or adolescent does not exist in isolation. Their struggles are often deeply connected to their family environment, school experience, and social world. For this reason, our work extends beyond the young client. We collaborate closely with parents and caregivers, providing guidance, psychoeducation, and strategies to support their child effectively at home. We help parents understand what their child is going through, recognize how their own responses may be contributing to or alleviating the difficulty, and build parenting approaches that foster emotional security and resilience. When appropriate, we also coordinate with schools and other professionals involved in the child's life to ensure a comprehensive, consistent support system.

Parent involvement is carefully calibrated based on the age and needs of the child. For younger children, parents are often active participants in sessions. For adolescents, we respect their growing need for privacy and autonomy while maintaining open communication with parents about progress and general themes. We believe that the most effective support for young people happens when the child, parents, and counsellor work together as a team.

Niramaya Family and Child Counselling Centre is located at Azhchangadan House, Vattapparambu P.O., Angamaly, Kerala – PIN 683579. For families in and around Angamaly and the broader Ernakulam region, we offer in-person Child and Adolescent Counselling sessions at our welcoming, child-friendly centre. Our space is designed to help young clients feel comfortable and safe, with age-appropriate materials and a warm, non-clinical atmosphere that puts children and teens at ease from the moment they walk in.

Understanding that today's families have busy schedules and that young people are increasingly comfortable with digital connections, we also offer online Child and Adolescent Counselling services. Our secure, confidential video platform allows children and teens to connect with their counsellor from the comfort and privacy of their own home. This can be especially helpful for adolescents who may feel more at ease speaking from their familiar environment, or for families whose schedules or location make in-person visits challenging.

Our online counselling services for children and adolescents are available to clients across India and around the world.
